For Sand Casting, FDM Does More Than Just Patterns

FDM technology helps the saand casting industry become more effcientThe sand casting industry is looking to become more efficient, and Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology has proven valuable. The first foundry/pattern shop to use FDM for matchplate patterns (about 6 years ago) has owned an FDM machine for 3 years now. In that time, it’s resorted to building a matchplate on a CNC machine just once.

Others have had similar experiences; from sand-core boxes to split patterns, FDM works extremely well for casting patterns.

But patterns are not the only way FDM can help sand casters. The technology can help build marketing prototypes, pattern-design scale models, and jigs and fixtures. From concept to design, on to production and finally inspection, sand casters have called FDM into service throughout the development cycle. Tapping FDM in all of these areas can make it a game changer, saving companies hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.
