3D Printed Fasteners That You Can’t Pull Apart! Objet at Euromold 2012

Rotite device – high surface contact male and female parts that interlock to create strong fasteners and closers

We had a nice surprise visit to the Objet booth yesterday. Stuart Burns, technical director from a very innovative company called Rotite paid us a visit to demonstrate how Objet’s 3D printers were used to prototype some of the incredible fasteners and closing devices that his company has designed and created.

There is even a closing device made in Objet’s ABS-like Digital Material (courtesy of IPF, one of our favorite service bureaus in the UK and the  owner of 3 Objet Connex500 multi-material systems!). This closing device consists of 2 small clips with male and female grooved touch points. When these 2 surfaces are interlocked through a 90 degree turn you create an incredibly strong connection that can support the weight of a person – as demonstrated in this video below.

This really is 3D printing at its best – helping innovators such as Stuart to rapidly and cost-effectively develop new intellectual property, test new product ideas and then bring them to market.
