3D Printed Daniel Hilldrup Lampshade Shines with 46 Colors, Multiple Material Properties

Creative artist Daniel Hilldrup is hard at work putting the Objet500 Connex 3 Color Multi-material 3D Printer by Stratasys through its paces with TRIG – a fully 3D printed, multi-color lampshade in the style of Gaudi.

Hilldrup is unusually gifted at pushing the envelope of 3D printed art applications. His previous works include ReGen, a diplomatic gift from Britain to Israel, and Flux, both of which were 3D printed using PolyJet 3D printing technology by Stratasys.

TRIG continues on Hilldrup’s geometric theme, inspired by Gaudi.

“It is more in the spirit of Gaudi than one particular work of his, although without doubt his work at Park Güell in Barcelona had a large impact on me,” Hilldrup said. “In the wider sense, it is more about the reinterpretation of organic forms using contemporary tools and methods of the time, as did Gaudi.

“The capture and transformation of dynamic forms under physically simulated forces into something else is at the heart of my work, and is a theme I have often revisited.”

TRIG is created using polygonal shapes of the cyan, magenta, and yellow color palette available with the Objet500 Connex3 3D Printer – with ten palettes of color combinations available.

“I chose the Objet500 Connex3 color 3D printing as it offered me a wide and vibrant color spectrum in which to emphasize and separate the design’s triangulated nature,” Hilldrup said. “I originally wanted to utilize a clear palette, and this is something I still would like to do in the future, as this would offer another aspect to the design.”

For the organization of the 46 different colors and material identities, a script was developed to randomly allocate each characteristic along the surface of the lampshade. The Objet500 Connex3 3D Printer allowed Hilldrup to 3D print the entire piece in a single build using color multi-material 3D printing.

“In this instance, the potential of the color multi-material 3D printing technology instigated and inspired the entire process and design,” Hilldrup said. “In a more general sense, it allows us to have greater freedom and means of expression when it comes to concept exploration and translation into physical output. I try not to get stuck on any one technology but if a design demands multi-color and multi-material properties, then I know where to look.”

Hilldrup’s first project with the recently introduced Objet500 Connex3 Color Multi-material 3D Printer went off without a hitch.

Regarding his future plans, Hilldrup explained “I obviously can’t give too much away at this point, but I’m hopefully going to begin another interesting lighting project shortly. There may even be some additive manufacturing-based furniture design on the horizon pretty soon.”
