The United States has led the world for about 100 years but China is projected to surpass the US in total manufacturing output this year. Mark Mills has an interesting article on Forbes.com: “Manufacturing, 3D Printing and What China Knows About the Emerging American Century” that says Manufacturing success in the coming decades will depend more on information-centric technologies such as 3D printing and less upon labor cost than in the past. He says:  “If the future of manufacturing is information-centric  --  from materials innovation, to 3D printing, to disruptive business models --  is that a field where China necessarily dominates?  Could be, but there is no guarantee.  Creativity, innovation, flexibility, flexible education, entrepreneurship are the characteristics needed to foster the new era of manufacturing. These are the hallmarks of the American enterprise.”
